Brazilian Zouk Pioneers in Canada

Premiere Brazilian Zouk education, events, and performances in Toronto, Canada. Inspiring since 2010.

Our Story

dZouk Productions was founded in 2010 by Darius Zi with a focus on promoting Brazilian Zouk in Canada and beyond.

dZouk’s journey started with artistic choreographies and productions, including The Fire Worshippers, one of their signature pieces. dZouk later branched into Brazilian Zouk instruction, founding the Zouk University program in Toronto, Canada and the Vision Dance program to bring Brazilian Zouk to people with full or partial vision loss. dZouk also runs parties and socials for the local dance community.

In 2014, the same year as founding the Vision Dance program, dZouk created the See Inside Me dance production, following the life of a woman learning to live with vision loss and featuring international dancers and members of the Vision Dance program. The production was first performed at dZouk’s first-year event, Vision Dance Encounter, and raised money for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. Over the years, the production has been performed several times, and was showcased as a Best of Ontario feature at the Pan-Am Games in Toronto.

In 2015, dZouk founded its flagship Brazilian Zouk festival called Canada Zouk Congress and production called Cirque du Zouk. The event draws several hundred dancers from around the world to Toronto annually to learn and grow, and is widely recognized as one of the best Brazilian Zouk events in the world. The past two editions have sold out of follower passes within a few minutes, and leader passes within a few weeks.

After the pandemic hiatus, dZouk reopened its operations, classes, and events in in September 2022 and announced their second international festival called “Zouk The North” to be held in Vancouver in 2023.

dZouk aims to continue growing Brazilian Zouk in Toronto, Canada, and around the world through their classes, socials, and events. Stay tuned for more great projects to come!

Meet Our Amazing Team

Natalia
Team Bios

Alyona began training in Ballet at age five, later moving into competitive ballroom dancing in her early teens. She ultimately found partner dancing in her early 20s, beginning with Hustle (which she began to teach in her hometown). After she moved to Canada, she found Brazilian Zouk through a chance encounter at a university dance club. Since then, she has grown from Ground 0 to Instructor with dZouk, competes and travels internationally, and performs on the dZouk Troupe in Cirque du Zouk. Most recently, she was featured as an instructor at Canada Zouk Congress - and she also makes time to do some social West Coast Swing dancing on the side! Students appreciate Alyona's strong grasp of technique and ability to identify and solve issues in their dance. She adores expanding her horizons, especially when it comes to power moves like counterbalance, spins, dips, lifts and drops! Alyona achieved her MAC Approved designation in May 2023, and was the first person in the world to score 100% on the practical component of the examination.

Alyona Zhuravlyova

Natalia started her dance journey at the age of 13 and has trained and performed professionally in the styles of jazz, hip-hop, Bollywood, tango, salsa, and bachata. She discovered Zouk in 2011 and trained with both national and international instructors. Since 2015, Natalia has taught and performed at various local and international Zouk events, including Canada Zouk Congress, ZoukMX, NY ZoukFestival, DancelifeX, Hawaii Zouk Congress, VancitySBK, DC ZoukHeat, Toronto Zouk Marathon, FutureZouk Chicago, GYZO Montreal, and Canada International Dance Convention. Most recently, Natalia has also taught Zouk classes in Mexico City and Guatemala. Natalia has a passion for teaching and performing and is excited to share it with you all. What she loves most about teaching is seeing a student grow and be inspired by the music and movement, and she is honoured to be a part of that journey. Natalia is a MAC Certified International Instructor.

Iva started ballet and cheerleading at age 6, and has been a passionate dancer since. The have trained formally in ballet, hip-hop, jazz, contemporary, lyrical, and tap dance. In College, they discovered Bachata and became an avid partner dancer. They found themselves social dancing multiple times a week, performing in Bachata and Kizomba, and ultimately discovered Brazilian Zouk in 2016. They trained with several instructors in Toronto and abroad, including dZouk! In April 2022, they placed 2nd in a Tier 3 BZDC competition at Zouk Heat, and were featured as an instructor at Canada Zouk Congress 2022. Iva Peycheva

Associate Instructor

Eleonora has had a passion for movement from her formative years. She has trained in ballet and musical theatre, and discovered the world of partner dancing after moving to Canada in 2012. From there, she began training, performing, and avidly social dancing in Brazilian Zouk, Bachata, Salsa, Afro, and Dance Hall. Out of all the dances she tried, Brazilian Zouk spoke to her the most - so she began travelling and training for Zouk, and has been learning and growing with dZouk since 2018 while also working on her skills in Kizomba, Semba, and Urban. She dedicates herself to not only learning the steps and background of each dance, but also their moral etiquette from a performance and social perspective. She has won competitions in both Brazilian Zouk and Kizomba, and is also now learning the art of DJing under the tutelage of some of Brazilian Zouk's best. She also performs as part of the dZouk Troupe in shows like Cirque du Zouk, and was featured as an instructor at Canada Zouk Congress 2022. Together with her partner Iva, she forms one half of Zouk Explosão and also works as an Associate Instructor with dZouk, performing and teaching with them. She achieved her MAC Approved designation in May 2023.

Sharing Our Passion

dZouk raised me as a Zouk dancer from ground zero to what I currently am! I’m grateful to all the opportunities I had here from learning zouk basics to teaching, performing and being a part of a great team! It’s more than just a dance studio, it’s a family away from home!

Alyona

Instructor

DZouk is like a family to me. I constantly feel their love and support and it keeps me motivated to keep on pursuing my passion for teaching and dancing. Even when I was their student, I felt all of this and felt very motivated to keep on learning. After being their student for a while, I joined them on the stage for the first time in 2019 for the show Cirque Du Zouk, which is where I met my dance partner Eleonora. I am very thrilled and honoured to be teaching under dZouk and to be in future Cirque Du Zouk shows.

Iva

Associate Instructor

Being part of dZouk has been a true blessing for me. Not only Laura played a huge part in my diving back into training and the Toronto scene, but her and Darius gave me a chance to dip my toes into performing again by being part of Cirque Du Zouk in 2019. The amount of passion and commitment and professionalism they both have for this dance and this scene is the reason that to this day, despite having my own classes with my dance partner Iva, I am proud and thrilled to be part of their crew and keep growing as a dance teacher and as an artist alongside them.

Eleonora

Associate Instructor

dZouk helped me find a family I didn’t know I needed. Their classes helped to hone my technique and their performances pushed me to work hard in the hopes to one day join them on stage. Their support helped me to be more than I ever thought I could be. Without them I wouldn’t be the DJ and dancer I am today.

Shasta

Associate Instructor, DJ

I have been dancing with dZouk as a student and performer since 2015, and the team is part of my chosen family at this point. Cirque du Zouk and Canada Zouk Congress are always highlights of my year. After taking many, many dance classes in my life, I also know that dZouk's approach to teaching is designed to turn out confident, competent social dancers that contribute to their community, and I am proud to be a part of it.

Caitlin Ferguson

Associate Instructor, DJ

To me, zouk is about combining unique movements and connections with both yourself and your partner to create an enjoyable experience for both lead and follow in ways not found in many other dances. Perhaps because of this, I often find the Zouk community to be very accepting and open minded.

Colin Campbell, DJ Colateral

Teaching Assistant, DJ

"dZouk has been my dance family for the past several years and have been there for me since the beginning of my Zouk journey. I’m blessed to be part of such a wonderful and nurturing team."
